Matador AI Alternatives for Dealerships: A Fair Comparison
Compare four Matador AI alternatives on AI control, CRM and DMS links and contract terms, plus a checklist for dealers leaving Matador's auto-renewing terms.
The best Matador AI alternative for a dealership depends on where you want AI to live and how much it may send without a person checking it. Impel offers another AI agent layer, Podium combines an inbox with an AI employee, and DriveCentric and Shiftix Cloud put AI inside the CRM itself.
At a glance
- Impel suits car dealers and groups that want to swap one AI agent layer for another, with sales, service, chat and voice agents working beside the existing CRM.
- Podium suits car dealers that want texting, reviews, payments, phones and an autonomous AI employee called Jerry in one platform, and accept Podium's standard 12-month term.
- DriveCentric suits car dealers that are ready to replace their CRM and want AI agents built into it.
- Shiftix Cloud suits auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers that want a CRM and Unified Customer Inbox where staff review and approve AI drafts before they are sent.
- Matador AI's terms of service, effective March 16, 2026, renew automatically and accept cancellation only by email to cancel@matador.ai, so check your order form before any demo.
How we compared Matador AI alternatives
We compared four alternatives to Matador AI on the same criteria, using each vendor's own website read on October 27, 2026. Shiftix Cloud publishes this guide and is one of the products compared.
- How options were chosen: the pages that rank for Matador searches are lists such as G2's Matador alternatives page and Spyne's list of 17 alternatives, which mix AI tools, phone systems, CRMs and website vendors. We picked one option for each way of replacing Matador: another AI agent layer (Impel), an inbox with an AI employee (Podium), and two CRMs with built-in AI (DriveCentric and Shiftix Cloud).
- Evidence: each vendor's product, integrations and pricing pages, plus the published terms of service for Matador AI and Podium. Nothing was tested first-hand, and no vendor reviewed this guide.
- Criteria: what the product is, who it is built for, inbox and channels, AI agents, who approves AI messages, handoff to staff, campaigns, CRM and DMS links, whether pricing is published, contract terms we could read, and who it suits.
- "Not stated" means the pages we read did not cover a point. It does not mean the product lacks it.
- No prices. We say only whether each vendor publishes pricing on its own site.
What Matador AI does for dealerships, according to Matador
Matador AI sells car dealerships five AI agents that answer, follow up and book appointments by text, voice, chat, email and Instagram, and it works alongside the dealer's CRM rather than replacing it. The Matador automotive CRM page answers its own question with "No. Matador is conversational AI that works alongside the automotive CRM a dealership already uses."
- AI agents: the Matador AI home page lists AI Engage (first outreach), AI Reply (live conversations and booking), AI Follow-Up (cold leads for 180 days), Call AI (sales calls, service calls and voicemail) and Chat AI (website visitors).
- Vendor claims: "Every lead answered in 30 seconds," "1,500+ Rooftops" and training on "nearly 1.2 billion messages from real dealership conversations." These are Matador's own figures and were not checked independently.
- Inbox and campaigns: an omni-channel inbox, broadcast texts, review invites, video messaging and automations. The Matador broadcast page calls broadcast a "one-off SMS campaign engine."
- Who approves AI messages: the home page describes automated "verification layers" that check messages before they reach customers. A staff approval step is not described.
- Handoff: the Matador sales page says "the AI stops messaging on that thread rather than talking over your team," and the reply delay "is configurable per lead source."
- Integrations: the Matador integrations page lists 62 connections, including certified partners eLead, VinSolutions, DealerSocket, Xtime and AutoSync, two-way CRM sync with Activix, DealerCX, DealerPeak and TMS, and repair-order data "read straight from the DMS" for Dealertrack, Reynolds and Reynolds, CDK Drive, PBS Systems, Tekion and Titan DMS.
- Verticals: car dealerships, OEMs and dealer groups, with a Matador powersports page that also names PWC and marine units. RV dealers are not mentioned, and no powersports or marine dealer system is named on the integrations page.
- Pricing: not published; the site offers a demo booking.
Three ways to replace Matador AI
Replacing Matador AI is first a decision about where AI should sit in your store, and only then a choice of vendor. Because Matador is a layer on top of your CRM, removing it leaves the CRM in place and opens three paths.
- Swap the AI layer: keep your CRM and add a different AI agent vendor, such as Impel. This is the smallest change for staff, but you keep two systems and two contracts.
- Move to an inbox platform with AI: put texting, calls, reviews and an AI employee in one messaging product, such as Podium. This can replace several tools at once, but the CRM stays separate.
- Move AI into the CRM: choose a CRM with AI built in, such as DriveCentric or Shiftix Cloud. This removes a vendor and keeps every message on the same record as the lead, but it means a CRM migration.
A second decision cuts across all three paths: how much the AI may send on its own. Matador, Impel and Podium's Jerry describe AI that sends replies without a person approving each one, and Matador and Impel describe handing the conversation to staff at the right moment. Shiftix Cloud describes staff approving AI drafts before sending. Neither approach is right for every store; it depends on your staffing after hours and how much risk your managers will accept in an unchecked message.
AI agent and inbox alternatives: Impel and Podium
Impel and Podium are the alternatives that keep Matador's way of working, with AI that answers and follows up on its own beside your existing CRM. They differ in what else comes with the AI.
Impel
- What it is: a set of AI products for dealers. The Impel home page lists Sales AI, Service AI, Chat AI, Voice AI, Marketing AI and Merchandising AI, and says it is "Trusted by 8,000 Dealers and OEMs in 50+ Countries."
- Built for: automotive dealers, dealer groups, OEMs and agencies, plus a specialty vehicle section that names RVs, motorcycles and marine craft.
- Inbox and channels: SMS and email for Sales AI, plus chat and voice products. A shared staff inbox is not described on the pages we read.
- AI agents: the Impel Sales AI page says it "works every lead autonomously from the moment it enters the dealership's system."
- Who approves AI messages: not stated as a staff approval step. The page mentions business rules and "escalation logic."
- Handoff: "Sales AI generates a fully customized action brief for the assigned rep."
- Campaigns: Marketing AI is listed; details were not read for this guide.
- CRM and DMS links: the Impel integrations page names CDK Global, DealerSocket, Reynolds and Reynolds, VinSolutions, PBS Systems, Dealertrack and others. It does not say what data moves in which direction.
- Pricing: not published.
- Contract terms: not read for this guide; ask Impel.
- Who it suits: car dealers and groups that like Matador's approach and want another AI agent vendor, including merchandising tools such as vehicle walkarounds.
Podium
- What it is: a customer inbox with texting, reviews, payments, phones and an AI employee. The Podium automotive site says "6,000+ dealerships trust Podium."
- Built for: car dealerships on the automotive pages; its pricing page lists auto dealerships, home services, aesthetics and retail.
- Inbox and channels: the Podium automotive texting page says "Bring every lead, from any source, into a single inbox," with webchat and calls from business numbers.
- AI agents: Jerry, which "follows up 100% autonomously" across text, phone calls, webchat, social and email, according to the automotive site.
- Who approves AI messages: Jerry is described as autonomous. A separate manager agent, Operator, is described with "nothing goes out until you approve it."
- Handoff: Jerry will "hand off leads to your sales team when a buyer is ready."
- Campaigns: "two-way text campaigns" and textable review invites.
- CRM and DMS links: the texting page shows CDK Global, Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, VinSolutions, DealerSocket, Tekion and Titan DMS under "Connect the tools you already use," without saying what data moves.
- Pricing: not published; the pricing page asks for a custom quote.
- Contract terms: section 8.1 of the Podium terms of service sets a 12-month initial term that renews automatically unless written notice is given at least 30 days before the term ends. Your order form may differ.
- Who it suits: car dealers that want to replace Matador and their texting, review and payment tools with one platform, and are comfortable with an autonomous AI employee. Our Podium alternatives guide covers what Podium itself does and does not replace.
CRM-native alternatives: DriveCentric and Shiftix Cloud
DriveCentric and Shiftix Cloud are CRMs with AI built in, so choosing either one means the AI and the lead record live in the same system. That removes the separate AI vendor but requires moving off your current CRM.
DriveCentric
- What it is: an AI-powered CRM. The DriveCentric home page calls it "The CRM your dealership wants to use."
- Built for: car dealerships. RV, marine and powersports are not mentioned.
- Inbox and channels: built-in texting, email and live video inside the CRM.
- AI agents: the DriveCentric Automation Hub page describes agents that each "own a real dealership job," including a Sales Agent that "works every lead after hours until it's ready for a human handoff" and a Prospect Agent and Nurture Agent.
- Who approves AI messages: not stated.
- Handoff: the Prospect Agent "hands warm, sales-ready opportunities to your team."
- Campaigns: an Augmented Marketing product for follow-ups, service reminders and trade-in offers is listed.
- CRM and DMS links: the DriveCentric integrations page names DMS platforms including CDK Global, Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion, PBS, Autosoft, DealerBuilt and Dominion, without saying what data moves.
- Pricing: not published; the site offers a demo request.
- Contract terms: not read for this guide; ask DriveCentric.
- Who it suits: car dealers ready to replace their CRM who want AI agents running inside it. Our DriveCentric alternatives guide compares it with other CRMs on AI control.
Shiftix Cloud
- What it is: a Customer Operations Platform with a CRM, the Unified Customer Inbox and Aria AI Assistant. Shiftix Cloud is not a DMS; the CRM page describes "Shared context without replacing the DMS."
- Built for: auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers.
- Inbox and channels: phone, email, SMS, website forms, Facebook Messenger and live chat can be brought into one inbox. STOP and UNSUBSCRIBE replies are recognized and honored for Shiftix-managed messaging.
- AI agents: the Aria AI Assistant page says it "replies to new leads in under a minute, day or night, and keeps following up," and prepares SMS and email follow-up "for a team member to review and approve."
- Who approves AI messages: staff. The communications page says Aria AI Assistant "does not act autonomously." Because the Aria AI Assistant page also describes first replies in under a minute, ask how first replies are set up for your store.
- Handoff: not a handoff model; staff stay on the thread and finish each AI draft.
- Campaigns: the marketing page describes Review Builder for review requests by SMS and email. Broadcast campaigns are not described on the pages we read.
- CRM and DMS links: the Shiftix Cloud integrations page lists CDK (Drive), Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion, PBS, Lightspeed, IDS and EverLogic among others, each as a "DMS Integration," and says "availability, data direction, permissions, and setup are confirmed during implementation."
- Pricing: published on the Shiftix Cloud pricing page, with the top tier quoted by sales. Cost depends mainly on users, rooftops and communications capacity.
- Contract terms: the pricing page says "No contracts required," with discounted pricing for customers who commit.
- Who it suits: dealers, including RV, marine and powersports stores, that want to replace both Matador and their CRM and want a person to approve AI messages.
Five questions to ask any AI vendor before you sign
Every vendor in this guide describes fast, always-on AI, so the useful questions are about control, consent and exit. Ask each one to show the answer in a live account rather than describe it.
- What can the AI send without a person approving it? Ask to see the setting for after-hours replies, follow-up sequences and pricing questions separately.
- How does the AI know a salesperson has taken over? Matador says its AI stands down when a rep messages first. Ask every vendor what triggers the stop and whether it works when the rep texts from a personal phone.
- Who is responsible for consent? Section 3(b) of the Matador AI terms says "Customer is solely responsible for managing consents." Expect similar wording elsewhere, and ask how opt-outs carry across systems. Our guide to dealership text messaging rules covers consent by type of text.
- Where do conversations live if we leave? Ask whether every message and call transcript is written back to your CRM, and how to export the rest.
- What do you keep after we leave? Matador's terms say it "may retain Recorded Communications and Transcripts for product improvement, analytics, training of artificial intelligence models, and other business purposes." Ask each vendor for its equivalent clause.
If you are not sure the AI tool is where leads are being lost, the complimentary Revenue Leak Audit from Shiftix Cloud reviews lead response and follow-up with no obligation.
Checklist before you leave Matador AI
A Matador AI exit goes smoothly when the contract, data and first-reply coverage are settled before cancellation. These steps come from Matador's published terms, effective March 16, 2026; your order form may set different dates.
- Find your term and renewal date. Section 11(a) says the initial and renewal terms are "set forth in the applicable Order Form" and that the agreement "will automatically renew for successive periods." Notice of non-renewal is due "at least 30 days prior to the expiration of the then-current term."
- Send notice to the right address. Section 11(d) says cancellation must be sent "exclusively via email to cancel@matador.ai," with your account information, the effective date and a clear statement that you intend to cancel. Matador says it will acknowledge within 48 hours, so keep the reply.
- Plan for fees already committed. Section 5(d) says "All fees are non-cancelable," and section 11(c) says termination does not entitle the customer to a refund.
- Check what is already in your CRM. Matador describes two-way sync with some CRMs and lead data with others. Before cancelling, open a sample of leads and confirm that conversations and appointments are on the CRM record. The terms we read do not describe a data export process, so ask Matador in writing how to export anything that is not.
- Cover the first reply on day one. If Matador answers after-hours leads and calls today, set up the replacement before the cutover date. Our missed call text-back guide covers calls you cannot pick up, and our lead response time guide shows how to measure the gap.
- Re-check texting registration. A new texting provider will usually register your brand and campaign for 10DLC again. Our 10DLC registration guide for dealerships explains the steps.
- Remove old website code. Take Matador's chat widget off your website on the switch date so shoppers do not reach an inactive chat.
Which Matador AI alternative should you choose?
The right Matador AI alternative follows from two choices: where the AI should live, and whether a person approves its messages. Use these rules as a starting point.
- You like your CRM and want another AI agent vendor: shortlist Impel, and ask how its action briefs reach your reps.
- You want AI plus texting, reviews, payments and phones in one tool: shortlist Podium, and read its 12-month term before signing.
- You are a car dealer ready to change CRM and want AI agents inside it: shortlist DriveCentric.
- You want staff to approve AI drafts, or you sell RVs, boats or powersports: shortlist Aria AI Assistant with the Shiftix Cloud CRM. If you are comparing CRMs more widely, our guide to choosing a CRM for car dealerships scores the options on one checklist.
- You are not sure AI is the problem: measure lead response first with our speed to lead research summary.
Frequently asked questions
Is Matador AI a CRM?
No. Matador AI describes itself as conversational AI that works alongside the automotive CRM a dealership already uses. It connects to CRMs such as VinSolutions, eLead, DealerSocket and Activix, and offers a browser extension for browser-based CRMs. A dealer leaving Matador keeps its CRM, so the decision is only about which tool takes over the AI conversations.
Does Matador AI publish its pricing?
No. Matador AI's website does not show plans or prices and asks dealers to book a demo. Before you compare quotes, ask for the order form as well, because Matador's terms leave the length of the initial term and each renewal to the order form, and fees are described as non-cancelable once committed.
Does Matador AI work for RV and boat dealers?
Partly. Matador AI's powersports page lists PWC and marine units among the products it covers, but RVs are not mentioned and its integrations page names no RV, marine or powersports dealer system. RV and boat dealers should ask Matador which of their own DMS and inventory systems it connects to before signing.
Find where leads slip before you change AI tools
A new AI tool answers faster, but it cannot fix routing, ownership or follow-up gaps on its own. The Revenue Leak Audit from Shiftix Cloud is complimentary, with no obligation and no software purchase required. It looks at lead response, follow-up, conversion, customer retention, accountability and workflow, and Shiftix walks through the findings with you, whichever tool you choose.
