Gubagoo Alternatives for Dealers: Three Chat Options and an Exit Checklist

Compare three Gubagoo alternatives on who answers chat, AI control, CRM links and deal building, plus a checklist for leaving a Gubagoo contract on time.

Buyer's guide · AutoLeadsWebsite chat

The right Gubagoo alternative depends on which Gubagoo job you are replacing: chat answered by an outside team, AI chat, or online deal building. ActivEngage replaces staffed chat, Dealer Funnel replaces it with an AI-first inbox, and Shiftix Cloud puts website chat inside a CRM your own staff work, while none of the three replaces Gubagoo Virtual Retailing.

At a glance

  • Gubagoo, part of Reynolds and Reynolds, suits car dealers that want outside chat specialists, AI chat and online deal building from one vendor.
  • ActivEngage suits car dealers that want website chat answered by live people, either fully managed or shared with their own BDC, and it connects to partner digital retailing tools rather than offering its own.
  • Dealer Funnel suits car dealerships that want AI to answer text, calls, web chat, email and Facebook messages in one inbox, synced to an existing dealer CRM, on a month-to-month basis.
  • Shiftix Cloud suits auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers that want live chat, texting, calls and email in a CRM run by their own staff, with Aria AI Assistant drafting follow-up for staff to approve.
  • Gubagoo's published dealer terms renew automatically unless written notice is given at least 30 days before the term ends, so check your own agreement before you book demos.

How we compared Gubagoo alternatives

We compared three alternatives with Gubagoo on the same criteria, using each vendor's own website. Shiftix Cloud publishes this guide and is one of the products compared.

  • How options were chosen: directory pages that rank for Gubagoo alternatives, such as G2's Gubagoo alternatives list, mix CRMs, DMS vendors and texting tools. We chose one option for each way a dealer can replace Gubagoo chat: staffed chat (ActivEngage), an AI-first inbox (Dealer Funnel) and a CRM with its own inbox (Shiftix Cloud). Digital retailing replacements are covered separately below.
  • Evidence: each vendor's own pages and Gubagoo's published dealer terms, read on October 28, 2026. Much of gubagoo.com loads as a script, so for some Gubagoo pages we could read only the page title and description. Nothing was tested first-hand, and no vendor reviewed this guide.
  • Criteria: what the product is, who answers chats, what the AI does and who controls it, online deal building, CRM and DMS connections, which dealers it is built for, whether pricing is published, contract terms where published, and who it suits.
  • "Not stated" means the pages we read did not cover a point. It does not mean the product lacks it.
  • No prices. We say only whether each vendor publishes pricing.

What Gubagoo does for dealerships, according to Gubagoo

Gubagoo sells dealerships website chat, online deal building and a customer data product, and its About page says "More than 8,500 dealerships worldwide partner with Gubagoo, including 90% of the top dealer groups in America." The same page says Gubagoo is "proud to be a part of the Reynolds and Reynolds family"; AM Online reported the completed acquisition in June 2021.

  • Products: the About page lists Chat, Virtual Retailing, Curator, GLive, Publisher, ServicePro and Text+.
  • Who answers chats: the Gubagoo Chat page describes "AI-powered chat" with "live specialist support" that moves conversations forward 24/7. Gubagoo's dealer terms (section 1(c)) refer to "chat specialists hired by Gubagoo", separate from the dealer's own staff.
  • AI and control: Gubagoo's AI layer is called GubaIQ. A Gubagoo blog post describes an "AI Handoff" feature that lets you "swap between AI and human agent at any time." The pages we read did not say whether staff approve AI replies before they are sent.
  • Online deal building: the Virtual Retailing page describes software that lets car shoppers build deals online and "get real-time lender approvals".
  • Customer data: the Curator page calls Curator "The Industry's First Unified Intelligence Engine" and says it syncs "directly into your CRM."
  • Integrations: the Gubagoo integrations page describes connections to "messaging apps, CRM systems, inventory tools, and analytics". The version we could read did not name CRM or DMS partners.
  • Built for: car dealers; the Gubagoo site has OEM program pages for many car brands. RV, marine and powersports dealers are not stated.
  • Pricing: not published on the pages we read.
  • Contract: section 9(c) of the dealer terms says the agreement renews for periods equal to the initial term unless a party gives "written notice of its intent not to renew at least thirty (30) days prior to the expiration". The initial term is set in each dealer's own exhibit.

What you replace when you leave Gubagoo: a job map

Leaving Gubagoo can mean replacing up to five separate jobs, and no option in this guide covers all five. Mark the jobs your store uses every week, then check each one against this map, which reflects what each vendor's pages describe, not tested results.

  • Website chat answered by an outside team: ActivEngage (fully managed or co-managed). Dealer Funnel and Shiftix Cloud do not describe a staffed chat team; AI or your own staff answer.
  • AI that answers website chat: Dealer Funnel (Carly, which can reply on its own) and ActivEngage (an AI Receptionist that routes to live people). Shiftix Cloud's Aria AI Assistant replies to new leads and drafts follow-up for staff to approve; the pages we read did not describe it answering the website chat window.
  • Chat that continues by text and other channels: all three describe more than one channel. Dealer Funnel and Shiftix Cloud put text, calls, email, chat and Facebook messages in one inbox.
  • Online deal building for shoppers (Gubagoo Virtual Retailing): none of the three describes its own shopper-facing deal builder. ActivEngage connects chat to Dealer.com and Accelerate My Deal. Shiftix Cloud lets staff build quotes that customers review and accept online.
  • Customer data and reporting (Gubagoo Curator): not compared in this guide. If your store relies on Curator, ask each vendor how its reporting replaces it.

If you keep Gubagoo Virtual Retailing and replace only chat, ask both vendors how a chat lead and a deal started online reach the same customer record in your CRM. To see where leads are already slipping between tools, the complimentary Revenue Leak Audit reviews lead response and follow-up with no obligation.

The alternatives, compared on the same criteria

Each alternative below is described on the same criteria as Gubagoo, using that vendor's own pages.

ActivEngage

  • What it is: website chat and messaging services and software for car dealers, OEMs and inventory sites, per Why ActivEngage.
  • Who answers chats: live people. The managed messaging page says the service is "staffed with 100% real Customer Engagement Experts" and describes a 24/7 team. The co-managed page offers three modes: ActivEngage as standby when your team misses a chat, "Race-to-Chat" where whoever answers first takes it, and after-hours coverage. Dealers who staff chat themselves can buy the messaging software alone.
  • AI and control: the AI Suite page says "AI should drive you to a live person, not keep you from one." Its AI Receptionist acknowledges leads and routes conversations to live staff. The page does not describe a staff approval step for AI summaries or outreach.
  • Online deal building: not its own product. The RetailSync page says it is integrated with Cox Automotive's Dealer.com and Accelerate My Deal.
  • CRM and DMS connections: the software page lists "CRM Integration" without naming CRMs.
  • Built for: car dealers. RV, marine and powersports are not stated.
  • Pricing: not published. Contract: not stated.
  • Who it suits: car dealers that want people, not AI, on the first chat reply and want to keep a staffed chat model after Gubagoo.

Dealer Funnel

  • What it is: an AI-assisted inbox for car dealerships; its home page calls it "The platform car dealerships run their whole BDC on."
  • Who answers chats: AI first. Text, voice, web chat, email and Facebook messages arrive in one inbox, and the home page says "AI answers every lead and phone call in seconds, 24/7." Dealer Funnel does not describe a staffed chat team.
  • AI and control: its AI, Carly, "Drafts and sends real replies" over text, web chat and Facebook and can hand off to a person. Inside the inbox, "Carly writes. Your people pick, edit, and send." Voice AI answers calls.
  • Online deal building: none. Dealer Funnel's own Gubagoo comparison page says Dealer Funnel does not offer online checkout or digital retailing.
  • CRM and DMS connections: two-way sync with VinSolutions, eLeads, Tekion, Reynolds and Reynolds, DealerSocket, ProMax and Cox Automotive, per the home page.
  • Built for: car dealerships and dealer groups. RV, marine and powersports are not stated.
  • Pricing: published on the Dealer Funnel pricing page. Contract: the home page describes month-to-month service with "no long-term contracts" and "No setup fees."
  • Who it suits: car dealers that are comfortable with AI answering first, want to keep their current CRM, and do not need online deal building from the same vendor.

Shiftix Cloud

  • What it is: a customer operations platform with a CRM that works alongside your DMS. Shiftix Cloud is not a DMS.
  • Who answers chats: your own staff. The Unified Customer Inbox brings together "Phone, Email, SMS, Website Forms, Facebook Messenger, and Live Chat." The pages we read do not describe a staffed chat team.
  • AI and control: human-controlled. The Aria AI Assistant page says it replies to new leads in under a minute, day or night, offers "Configured after-hours conversation support", and prepares SMS and email follow-up "for a team member to review and approve."
  • Online deal building: staff-led, not shopper self-service. Vehicle Ops, described on the inventory and deals page, lets staff build quotes with vehicle price, trade-in and finance terms; customers can review and accept a quote online and pay a deposit. The page says the platform does not process the remaining vehicle balance.
  • CRM and DMS connections: the integrations page lists CDK (Drive), Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion and others as DMS integrations, and describes the list as potential connection targets rather than a guarantee of a one-click connector. Gubagoo is not listed.
  • Built for: auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers.
  • Pricing: published on the Shiftix Cloud pricing page; cost depends mainly on users, rooftops and modules. Contract: not compared here.
  • Who it suits: auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers that want their own team answering chat, texting, calls and email in one CRM, with AI drafts approved by staff.

Replacing Gubagoo Virtual Retailing

Replacing Gubagoo Virtual Retailing is a separate decision from replacing chat, because none of the three chat alternatives above sells its own shopper-facing deal builder. A digital retailing tool has to handle payments, trade values, credit applications and lender decisions, and pass the deal to your desk and DMS, so compare it with your F&I and desking managers in the room.

  • Ask your DMS vendor first. CDK, for example, describes CDK Roadster Express Storefront as helping dealers start "a better, more modern car-buying experience online and in store." Your website provider or OEM digital program may also offer an approved tool.
  • Check how chat and deals connect. ActivEngage connects to Dealer.com and Accelerate My Deal. Ask any other pairing to show a chat lead and an online deal landing on one customer record.
  • Keep one owner for the deal. Decide who follows up when a shopper starts a deal online and stops: the BDC, the salesperson who owns the lead, or the desk.

Checklist before you leave a Gubagoo contract

A Gubagoo exit starts with your own agreement, because Gubagoo's published dealer terms set renewal and notice rules that your exhibit fills in. Work through these steps at least 60 days before your renewal date.

  1. Find your term and renewal date. The initial term is in your exhibit. Section 9(c) of the dealer terms renews it for an equal period unless written notice is given at least 30 days before it ends.
  2. Send notice the way the terms say. Section 14(b) directs cancellation requests to Gubagoo's cancellation email address. Keep a dated copy.
  3. Ask for your data in writing. We did not find a clause on returning or exporting dealer data after termination, and section 5 grants Gubagoo a licence to customer data that the terms call "non-terminable." Ask in writing for chat transcripts and leads, in a format your CRM can import, before the end date.
  4. Remove the chat code. Ask your website provider to remove the Gubagoo script on the end date and add the new one, so shoppers never see two chat windows or none.
  5. Re-point lead routing. Chat leads usually reach a CRM as ADF XML lead emails or an API. Send a test lead from the new tool and confirm the source name reads correctly in your CRM reports.
  6. Check OEM program rules. If Gubagoo came through an OEM digital program, ask the program which chat and digital retailing vendors are approved before you sign.

A two-week chat test before you sign

A two-week chat test gives you your own evidence, which is worth more than any vendor's averages. Run it on your current Gubagoo chats first, then ask each finalist for a trial or a set of real transcripts from a comparable store.

  1. Pull 20 recent chats: 10 during business hours and 10 after hours, mixed between sales and service.
  2. Score each chat on five points, one point each: answered within one minute; correct answer on price, availability or hours, or an honest handoff when unsure; name and a mobile number captured; lead arrived in the CRM with the right source; appointment set or a clear next step agreed.
  3. Time the handoff. For every chat that became a lead, note how long it took a salesperson or BDC agent to make first contact. Our lead response time guide shows how to measure it the same way each time.
  4. Repeat with the finalist and compare the scores side by side. A higher score on after-hours chats matters most if that is where your current tool loses leads.

This test is a method, not a benchmark: 20 chats is a small sample, so treat a gap of one or two points as noise.

Which Gubagoo alternative should you choose?

The best Gubagoo alternative is the one that matches who you want answering your website chat and where you want the conversation to live afterwards.

  • You want people answering every chat: look at ActivEngage, and decide between fully managed and co-managed coverage.
  • You are comfortable with AI answering first and want to keep your CRM: look at Dealer Funnel, and test how its AI handles price and availability questions.
  • You want your own team to answer chat, text, calls and email in one CRM, with AI drafts approved by staff: look at Shiftix Cloud's Unified Customer Inbox and Aria AI Assistant. RV, marine and powersports dealers can start at the RV, marine or powersports pages.
  • You rely on Gubagoo Virtual Retailing: replace chat and digital retailing as two decisions, or stay with Gubagoo until you have a digital retailing tool that connects to your desk and DMS.

If your website chat vendor is part of a wider texting review, our Podium alternatives guide maps texting, reviews and payments, and our Impel alternatives guide compares AI agents on who approves messages.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Gubagoo?

Gubagoo is owned by Reynolds and Reynolds, the dealer management system company. Gubagoo's About page says it is part of the Reynolds and Reynolds family, and trade press reported the completed acquisition in June 2021. At the time, Reynolds said Gubagoo's technology serves dealers "on any system", but check with Gubagoo how its products work with the DMS you use today.

How much does Gubagoo cost?

Gubagoo does not publish pricing on the pages we read, so the cost comes from a quote. Software directories such as Capterra show a starting figure, but confirm any number with Gubagoo in writing. Website chat and digital retailing cost usually depends on the number of rooftops, whether chat is staffed by the vendor or by your team, which products you add, and OEM program terms.

Does Gubagoo chat use real people or AI?

Gubagoo describes both. Its Chat page describes AI-powered chat with live specialist support, its dealer terms refer to chat specialists hired by Gubagoo, and its GubaIQ AI Handoff feature lets a conversation switch between AI and a human agent. Ask Gubagoo how your own chats are split between AI and people, and review a sample of transcripts.

Can a dealership cancel Gubagoo at any time?

Not under the published standard terms, which describe a fixed initial term that renews automatically. Gubagoo's dealer terms say a party can stop renewal with written notice at least 30 days before the term ends, and the terms we read did not describe a general right for the dealer to end the agreement early outside a trial period. Your own signed agreement may differ, so read it first.

Before you change chat vendors, it helps to know where leads are lost today: in the first reply, the handoff to sales, or follow-up after the chat ends. The Revenue Leak Audit is complimentary, with no obligation and no software purchase required. Shiftix reviews lead response, follow-up, conversion, customer retention, accountability and workflow, then walks through the findings with you.
