CarNow Alternatives for Dealers: Chat, Messaging and Online Deals Compared
Compare three CarNow alternatives on who answers chat, AI control, CRM links and online deals, plus a worked timeline for leaving a CarNow contract.
The right CarNow alternative depends on which CarNow job you are replacing: website chat backed by an outside team, AI-assisted sales and service follow-up, or online deal building and payment search. Gubagoo replaces chat plus online deals, Dealer Funnel offers an AI-first inbox, and Shiftix Cloud puts chat inside a CRM your own staff work.
At a glance
- CarNow suits car dealers that want website chat with 24/7 BDC backing, digital retail, Search by Payment and AI follow-up from one vendor, with month-to-month renewal under its published EULA.
- Gubagoo, owned by Reynolds and Reynolds, suits car dealers that want AI chat with live specialist support and an online deal builder from one vendor.
- Dealer Funnel suits car dealerships that want AI to answer texts, calls, web chat and email in one inbox synced to their current CRM, and that do not need online deal building.
- Shiftix Cloud suits auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers that want chat, texting, calls and email in a CRM run by their own staff, with Aria AI Assistant drafts approved by a person.
- Under the CarNow EULA, a cancellation notice received after the first day of a month takes effect on the last day of the following month, so time your notice before you book demos.
How we compared CarNow alternatives
We compared CarNow and three alternatives on the same criteria, using each vendor's own website. Shiftix Cloud publishes this guide and is one of the products compared.
- How options were chosen: directory pages that rank for CarNow, such as Capterra's CarNow listing, mix website platforms, CRMs and texting tools. We chose one option for each way a dealer can replace CarNow chat: a vendor that also sells online deal building (Gubagoo), an AI-first inbox (Dealer Funnel) and a CRM with its own inbox (Shiftix Cloud).
- Evidence: each vendor's own pages and the CarNow end user licence agreement (EULA), read on October 28, 2026. Some Gubagoo pages load by script, so for those we could read only the page title and description. Nothing was tested first-hand, and no vendor reviewed this guide.
- Criteria: what the product is, who answers chats, what the AI does and who controls it, online deal building, follow-up after the chat, CRM and DMS connections, which dealers it is built for, whether pricing is published, contract terms where published, and who it suits.
- "Not stated" means the pages we read did not cover a point. It does not mean the product lacks it.
- No prices. We say only whether each vendor publishes pricing.
What CarNow does for dealerships, according to CarNow
CarNow sells car dealerships a website conversion layer plus AI sales and service follow-up, and its home page calls it "The AI-Enabled Conversion Platform for Automotive Retail." The CarNow About page says the company was founded in 2014, lists an office in Raleigh, North Carolina, and says it "supports over 4,000 dealerships."
- What it is: three product groups in the site navigation: Website Solutions (chat, digital retail and Search by Payment), Sales Follow Up (CruiseControl) and Service Follow Up (Lane Assist).
- Who answers chats: the Website Solutions page offers "AI-powered or managed chat," and the Chat and Messaging page lists "BDC-backed 24/7, 365" and "Ability to assist live." The pages we read did not say who staffs the managed chat.
- AI and control in chat: the CarNow +AI page says +AI "doesn't talk to your customers for you" and offers "AI-powered replies your team can send or customize," plus conversation summaries.
- Follow-up after the chat: the CruiseControl page says "AI sends personalized emails and texts for 120 days, escalating to sales when they're ready to buy," and scores shoppers on purchase history, trade activity and engagement. The page does not say whether staff approve those messages. Lane Assist describes AI outreach to customers due for service.
- Online deal building: the Digital Retail page describes "clear pricing, trade-in values, and payment details" for shoppers, and Search by Payment lets shoppers enter a monthly payment, down payment, term, credit tier and trade-in to find matching inventory.
- CRM and DMS connections: the Website Solutions page shows logos including CDK Global, DealerInspire, vAuto, xtime and DriveCentric under "Integrated with the solutions you rely on," without saying what each connection does.
- Built for: car dealers. The home page says CarNow "is an in-program partner with most major OEMs." In 2024, Auto Remarketing reported a CarNow system for independent car dealers. RV, marine and powersports dealers are not stated.
- Pricing: not published on the pages we read.
- Contract: the CarNow EULA says the initial term is set on each Sales Order, after which each Sales Order "shall automatically renew for additional terms of one (1) month each." The exit timeline is covered below.
What you replace when you leave CarNow: a job map
Leaving CarNow can mean replacing up to five separate jobs, and no option in this guide covers all five. Mark the jobs your store uses every week, then check each one against this map, which reflects what each vendor's pages describe, not tested results.
- Website chat with round-the-clock backing: Gubagoo describes AI chat with live specialist support, 24/7. Dealer Funnel's AI answers web chat and can hand off to a person. Shiftix Cloud lists live chat in its inbox, answered by your own staff; the pages we read did not describe an outside chat team.
- AI reply suggestions for staff (CarNow +AI): Dealer Funnel's inbox AI drafts replies that staff pick, edit and send. Shiftix Cloud's Aria AI Assistant drafts SMS and email follow-up for a team member to review and approve. Gubagoo's chat page did not describe a staff approval step.
- Automated sales follow-up (CarNow CruiseControl): Dealer Funnel's AI texts new leads. Aria AI Assistant replies to new leads and prepares follow-up for staff approval. Ask Gubagoo how follow-up after a chat is handled.
- Online deal building and payment search (CarNow Digital Retail and Search by Payment): Gubagoo Virtual Retailing lets shoppers build deals online. Dealer Funnel does not offer online checkout, according to its own comparison page. Shiftix Cloud's Vehicle Ops lets staff send quotes that customers review and accept online, which is staff-led rather than shopper self-service.
- Service follow-up (CarNow Lane Assist): not compared in this guide. If your service drive relies on Lane Assist, ask each vendor to show its service reminder and scheduling workflow.
If you keep CarNow Digital Retail and replace only chat, ask both vendors how a chat lead and a deal started online reach the same customer record in your CRM. To see where leads are slipping between tools today, the complimentary Revenue Leak Audit reviews lead response and follow-up with no obligation.
The CarNow alternatives, compared on the same criteria
Each CarNow alternative below is described on the same criteria as CarNow, from that vendor's own pages.
Gubagoo
- What it is: an "Automotive chat and digital retailing platform for automotive dealerships," per the Gubagoo About page description. Reynolds and Reynolds owns Gubagoo: AM Online reported the completed acquisition in June 2021, and a Gubagoo news page announced it.
- Who answers chats: the Gubagoo Chat page describes "AI-powered chat, text messaging, and live specialist support," 24/7, without saying which chats AI handles and which a specialist handles.
- AI and control: not stated on the pages we could read.
- Online deal building: yes. The Virtual Retailing page describes software that lets car shoppers build deals online and "get real-time lender approvals."
- Follow-up after the chat: not stated on the pages we could read.
- CRM and DMS connections: not named on the pages we could read.
- Built for: automotive dealerships. RV, marine and powersports are not stated.
- Pricing: not published on the pages we read. Contract: not read this time; check your own agreement.
- Who it suits: car dealers that want to keep chat and online deal building with one vendor after CarNow.
Dealer Funnel
- What it is: "AI agents for sales and service, responding instantly, 24/7," per the Dealer Funnel home page, with "text, voice, chat & email in one inbox."
- Who answers chats: AI first. Its AI, Carly, handles texting, web chat and Facebook messages and is described as "smart enough to hand off to a human." Staff can take over any conversation.
- AI and control: mixed by feature. Carly's texting "Drafts and sends real replies," so it can send without a person. In the inbox, "Carly writes. Your people pick, edit, and send."
- Online deal building: none. Dealer Funnel's own CarNow comparison page says Dealer Funnel has no on-site digital retail or online checkout, and names website digital retail, shop-by-payment and OEM program depth as areas where CarNow is stronger.
- Follow-up after the chat: Carly answers new leads by text, and the CarNow comparison page also describes voice AI that answers inbound calls.
- CRM and DMS connections: VinSolutions, CDK eLeads, Tekion, Reynolds and Reynolds, DealerSocket, ProMax and Cox Automotive, per the home page.
- Built for: car dealerships and dealer groups. RV, marine and powersports are not stated.
- Pricing: published on the Dealer Funnel website. Contract: the home page describes month-to-month service with "No long-term contracts" and "No setup fees."
- Who it suits: car dealers comfortable with AI answering first that want to keep their CRM and do not need online deal building.
Shiftix Cloud
- What it is: a customer operations platform whose CRM provides "Shared context without replacing the DMS." Shiftix Cloud is not a DMS.
- Who answers chats: your own staff. The Unified Customer Inbox brings together "Phone, Email, SMS, Website Forms, Facebook Messenger, and Live Chat." The pages we read do not describe an outside chat team.
- AI and control: human-controlled. The Aria AI Assistant page says it replies to new leads in under a minute, day or night, and prepares SMS and email follow-up "for a team member to review and approve."
- Online deal building: staff-led. Vehicle Ops, on the inventory and deals page, lets staff build and send quotes with vehicle price, trade-in and finance terms; customers can accept a quote online and pay an agreed deposit. Shiftix Cloud "does not process the remaining vehicle purchase balance."
- Follow-up after the chat: Aria AI Assistant drafts follow-up from customer history, and the inbox adds an opt-out disclosure to the first text and honors STOP replies.
- CRM and DMS connections: the integrations page lists CDK (Drive), Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion and others as DMS integrations, and calls the list "examples of potential connection targets" rather than a guarantee of a one-click connector. CarNow is not listed.
- Built for: auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers.
- Pricing: published on the Shiftix Cloud pricing page; cost depends mainly on users, rooftops and modules. Contract: not compared here.
- Who it suits: auto, RV, marine and powersports dealers that want their own team answering chat, texting, calls and email in one CRM, with AI drafts approved by staff.
CarNow exit timeline: a worked example
The CarNow exit date depends on the day your notice arrives, because section 7.4 of the CarNow EULA says a cancellation notice received after the first day of a calendar month takes effect on the "last day of the following calendar month." The steps below follow the EULA as published; your signed Sales Order may differ, so read it first.
- Check your Sales Order. Section 7.1 says the initial term "shall be set forth on the Sales Order." After that term, the Sales Order renews one month at a time. Section 7.2(iii) lets either party end the agreement with "no less than thirty (30) days prior written notice."
- Work out your end date. Example: a notice CarNow receives on March 5 takes effect on April 30, and section 7.4 says the dealer stays responsible for fees through the effective cancellation date. The EULA does not spell out what happens to a notice received on the first day of a month, so ask CarNow to confirm your date in writing.
- Send notice the way the EULA says. Section 7.2 says termination notices must go by email to CarNow's cancellation address with the subject line "Termination Notice." Keep a dated copy.
- Export your conversations before the end date. Section 8.1 says the dealer keeps ownership of its Customer Content, but we did not find an export procedure. Exhibit A, section A.07 says CarNow may deactivate the account immediately and delete it from its live site after a period of not less than 30 days. Ask in writing for chat transcripts, leads and texting opt-out records in a format your CRM can import.
- Swap the website code on one day. Ask your website provider to remove CarNow chat, digital retail and Search by Payment widgets on the end date and add the new tools, so shoppers never see two chat windows or none.
- Re-point lead routing and test it. Chat leads usually reach a CRM as ADF XML lead emails or an API. Send a test lead from the new tool and confirm the source name reads correctly in your CRM reports.
- Check OEM program rules. If CarNow came through an OEM digital program, ask the program which chat and digital retail vendors are approved before you sign.
A two-week trial scorecard before you switch
A two-week trial scorecard compares CarNow with a finalist on your own leads, using the four areas that decide most chat vendor changes: response handling, CRM handoff, texting consent and reporting. Score your current CarNow results first, then ask the finalist for a trial or a set of real transcripts from a comparable store.
- Response handling (5 points): pull 20 chats, half after hours. Give one point each for a reply inside one minute, a correct answer on price, availability or hours (or an honest handoff), a mobile number captured, an appointment or next step agreed, and a person taking over when the shopper asked for one.
- CRM handoff (3 points): for the same 20 chats, check that the lead reached your CRM, with the right source, and with the transcript attached. Time the first salesperson or BDC contact the way our lead response time guide describes.
- Texting consent (2 points): check that every chat that moved to text recorded the shopper's consent, and that a STOP reply ended texts from every tool, including automated follow-up such as CarNow CruiseControl. Our 10DLC registration guide explains the carrier side.
- Reporting (2 points): compare the vendor's chat lead count with the count your CRM shows for the same two weeks. A gap of more than one or two leads means something is not reaching your salespeople.
This scorecard is a method, not a benchmark: 20 chats is a small sample, so treat a difference of one or two points out of 12 as noise and look for patterns, such as every after-hours chat losing its mobile number.
Which CarNow alternative should you choose?
The best CarNow alternative is the one that matches who you want answering your website chat, and whether you still need shoppers to build deals online.
- You want online deal building and chat from one vendor: look at Gubagoo, and ask how its live specialists and AI split your chats.
- You are comfortable with AI answering first and want to keep your CRM: look at Dealer Funnel, and test how its AI handles price and availability questions.
- You want your own team answering chat, texts, calls and email in one CRM, with AI drafts approved by staff: look at Shiftix Cloud's Unified Customer Inbox and Aria AI Assistant. RV, marine and powersports dealers can start at the RV, marine or powersports pages.
- You rely on CarNow Digital Retail and Search by Payment: treat chat and digital retail as two decisions, or stay with CarNow until a replacement deal tool connects to your desk and DMS.
If CarNow is part of a wider texting review, our Podium alternatives guide maps texting, reviews and payments, and our Impel alternatives guide compares AI agents on who approves messages.
Frequently asked questions
How much does CarNow cost?
CarNow does not publish pricing on the pages we read, so the cost comes from a quote on a Sales Order. Software directories may show a figure, but confirm any number with CarNow in writing. For chat and digital retail tools, cost usually depends on the number of rooftops, the products you add, such as follow-up or digital retail, and any OEM program terms.
Can a dealership cancel CarNow at any time?
Yes, with notice, under the published CarNow EULA. Section 7.2 lets either party end the agreement for any reason with at least 30 days' written notice, sent by email to CarNow's cancellation address. Section 7.4 says a notice received after the first day of a month takes effect on the last day of the following month, and fees are due until then. Your signed Sales Order may differ.
Does CarNow AI talk to customers on its own?
It depends on the CarNow product. The CarNow +AI page says +AI does not talk to customers for you and instead suggests replies that staff send or edit. The CarNow CruiseControl sales follow-up page says its AI sends personalized emails and texts for 120 days before escalating to sales. Ask CarNow which settings your store would use.
Does CarNow work for independent dealers?
Yes. In June 2024, Auto Remarketing reported that CarNow launched Conversion+, a digital retail system for independent car dealers adapted from its franchised dealer platform with fewer features. Independent dealers comparing CarNow alternatives should check whether each vendor's OEM program features matter to them, since many are aimed at franchised stores.
Before you change chat vendors, it helps to know where leads are lost today: in the first reply, the handoff to sales, or follow-up after the chat ends. The Revenue Leak Audit is complimentary, with no obligation and no software purchase required. Shiftix reviews lead response, follow-up, conversion, customer retention, accountability and workflow, then walks through the findings with you.
